Yesterday's bathing water quality summit in Scarborough gave local councillors the opportunity to quiz Yorkshire Water and the Environment Agency about the continuing issues with water quality in Scarborough's South Bay.
The meeting, which was not open to the public or media, was attended by representatives from Yorkshire Water, the Environment Agency, North Yorkshire Council leaders, local councillors, and local businesses including McCains.
Scarborough Councillor Rich Maw, who attended the summit, says that progress is being made towards tackling the issue of bathing water quality in Scarborough and along the Yorkshire coast. He says that the summits provide an opportunity for various stakeholders, including the Environment Agency, Yorkshire Water, McCain's, and DEFRA, to come together and discuss the issues.
Councillor Maw says it was good to see that more data is being gathered to help identify the causes of the problems.
Councillor Maw says he's concerned that the water quality summit meetings, of which this is the third, are not able to consider a broad enough range of possible causes for the water quality issues,
He says that while the summits consider the impact of sea outfalls they don't look at factors further upstream.
It's understood that outcomes from the behind closed doors meeting will be released to the public soon.
Councillor Maw says he believes that the presence of local councillors at the summit is crucial to represent the people who use the bathing waters.
