Saint Catherine’s has launched its annual Sunrise Walk and is encouraging supporters old and new to take part.
Last year, due to the pandemic, the format was changed from a large-scale group event to instead asking participants to take on their own walks during the month of September.
Many participants walked the original route around North and South Bays in Scarborough, enjoying a spectacular sunrise and sharing photos on social media of their efforts.
With COVID safety still in mind and following huge success last year, with the event raising £20,000 for patient care, organisers are again asking people do their own Sunrise Walks in aid of Saint Catherine’s.
The Harbour Bar in Sandside, which has supported the event for over a decade, has kindly offered a free standard ice cream cone or soft drink to everyone taking part this year. Participants simply need to show their confirmation email (on their phone or printed out) to Harbour Bar staff during September and mention the Sunrise Walk.
Susan Stephenson, communications and marketing manager, said:
“The Sunrise Walk is a much-loved event in the hospice calendar and last year we were blown away by the amazing support from our community in the midst of a pandemic.
“We hope that people will still unite in spirit this year, as we continue to put safety first and encourage everyone to sign up for free and do a Sunrise Walk with family, friends or colleagues, at a location of their choice on any day this September. We are looking forward to seeing everyone’s photos and hearing about the special reasons why people are taking part. We would also like to say a huge thank you to the Harbour Bar for their kind and generous support.”

Anyone who would like to take part in the event is asked to register online at www.saintcatherines.org.uk/event/sunrise-walk-2021/
If you are unable to register online, please call (01723) 378406 or email fundraising@saintcatherines.org.uk.
Registration is FREE, but participants can make a donation when registering for an amount of their choice. There is also the option to request a fundraising pack and sponsor forms if you would like to raise sponsorship. People are also welcome to set up their own, personal online fundraising page.
The Saint Catherine's team say:
"Before your walk, if you would like us to share your story on social media, please send a photo and information about your plans to general@saintcatherines.org.uk with the subject line ‘Sunrise Walk’, or message us on Facebook.
During your walk, we are encouraging participants to wear something purple for Saint Catherine’s. Fancy dress is also encouraged! We would love to see your photos, videos and comments from your walk – if you are happy to share these, please email them to general@saintcatherines.org.uk or message us on Facebook.
If you have raised funds for Saint Catherine’s by taking part, please get in touch afterwards with your total by calling (01723) 378406 or emailing fundraising@saintcatherines.org.uk
How your support will help make a big difference
By supporting the Sunrise Walk, you will be helping to ensure that patients and their loved ones can receive the most outstanding care – at the time when they need it the most."
To run all of Saint Catherine’s services it costs around £5.5 million a year, with only a third of the funding available from the NHS. The charity relies on the generosity of the community to ensure it can raise the remainder and continue to provide much-needed care.
