The former leader of Scarborough Borough Council has expressed major safety concerns regarding proposed changes to vehicle access and drop-off points in the currently deferred Scarborough Gateway Plan.

Proposed changes to the area outside the station have drawn criticism over how passengers will safely access the site.
Former Scarborough Borough Council leader Derek Bastiman highlighted the severe risks of altering vehicle access and removing drop-off points:
"It worries me tremendously because people will be dropped off between buses in the widest part of Westborough, leading cars to get into the railway station and I think it's the biggest mistake we will make if we support this today. I think the idea's good for the improvements to the public realm, etc, but refusing public access for drop-off purposes is wholly wrong in my opinion."
An extensive redevelopment of Scarborough Station’s public realm and drop-off areas – more than three years in the making – has been deferred by councillors who said they were “seriously concerned” by aspects of the scheme.
Alternative parking and access routes featured heavily during the council meeting, with suggestions that existing nearby facilities could provide a safer solution for passengers.
Speaking about the logistics of the site, Councillor Bastiman added:
"It was a very short lift term that vehicles are in and out, and like the the speaker said about the access and I know we have discussed it today, but the access that's blocked off, at least if that was opened up, people would know that they could park in the car park behind former Comet building and gain access into the railway station that way in a safe and proper manner. I think it would be wrong of us to support an accident happening there like we had."
Decisions regarding the future of the Gateway Plan and its access routes remain pending while the regeneration project is paused.
