Ryedale MP On Langdale Fire Latest As Support Confirmed

A Ryedale MP says he's met with the government's Fire Director Peter Lee regarding the ongoing blaze at Langdale near RAF Fylingdales.

Kevin Hollinrake, whose patch includes Langdale Moor, says due to unexploded munitions, crews are using firebreaks, helicopters & drones.

He says government financial help has been sought:

"Well, I've met today [Wednesday with] officials, the director of fire from the department for community local communities about the situation with Langdale Moore Fire, which is getting more serious. When this fire gets into the piece, it's very difficult to control. We've got to make sure our local firefighters who are doing a great job, both the voluntary firefighters and our professional crews are giving all the support they can.

That's why I met with the director of fire. Does a request come for government support, financial support to make sure it's not just North Yorkshire? Taxpayers have to fund the cost of tackling this fire."

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue say they have 10 appliances at the scene currently and continue working with partners. A helicopter is also in use at the scene.

This is set to double after national assistance was confirmed from outside the county.

Their advice is to continue to avoid the area and follow the road closure notices.

Mr Hollinrake, MP for Thirsk & Malton, including Filey, says government funding will be forthcoming:

"I'm sure that'll be forthcoming today, something called a bellwind press. So hopefully that'll be fulfilled today. But also other capabilities are offered where necessary to the, to local firefighting efforts. National crews, of course, customer around the country, but also potentially military intervention, airborne intervention with water drop from planes.

"So we're gonna follow this through, make sure that happens. We also raise the point to bear the management of moorland. We know that this, the restrictions currently imposed by Natural England on the cool burning of heather moors do really have an impact on the likelihood of spread of fire. We've got to make sure in future these moorlands are managed properly to reduce the likelihood of this happen."

This has now been officially confirmed.
