Rooftop Café Project at Hornsea Inshore Rescue Progresses Despite Challenges

Hornsea Inshore Rescue has provided a reassuring update on the much-anticipated Rooftop Café project, addressing concerns over its progress.

The organisation has emphasised that while visible developments may be minimal, significant behind-the-scenes work is underway.

In a statement, Hornsea Inshore Rescue remarked, “Quiet progress doesn’t always look dramatic but it’s still progress.” This reflects the commitment to advancing the project, which is crucial for enhancing the lifeboat station's facilities and fundraising capabilities.

Key developments in the project include:

  • The appointment of an experienced, award-winning grant administrator in May, aimed at navigating the complexities of funding applications.
  • Completion of essential infrastructure and governance necessary for applying for major grants.
  • Securing a five-year lease for the rooftop and boat launch, with all profits directed to the lifeboat station.
  • An in-principle agreement for a twenty-year lease, which is essential for future grant applications.
  • Ongoing discussions with the local Council to ensure the project meets viability and sustainability standards.
  • Additionally, Hornsea Inshore Rescue is preparing to launch a lottery in collaboration with Dove House, which will provide a long-term income stream for the station.

The organisation acknowledges the challenges faced during its recent Christmas Lights event, which was marred by poor weather and last-minute cancellations. Despite these setbacks, the event still managed to raise over £700, demonstrating community support. “We’re not perfect — but we do learn and adapt,” they noted, indicating plans to improve future events by relocating stalls and performances indoors.

Hornsea Inshore Rescue has been dedicated to saving lives at sea for over three decades, rescuing hundreds of individuals. The organisation remains focused on its core mission while recognising the need to expand its fundraising efforts. Plans are underway to establish a dedicated fundraising team to alleviate pressure on trustees and support future initiatives.

The estimated cost of the Rooftop Café project stands at approximately £400,000. Hornsea Inshore Rescue emphasised the importance of laying a solid foundation for the project before securing funding. “Every step taken so far has been to ensure the project is sustainable and fundable,” they stated.

The organisation expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the community, affirming that it makes a significant difference. They encouraged anyone seeking updates on the project to reach out, reinforcing their commitment to transparency and community engagement.
