Road Closures in Scarborough as Tramway Carriages Lifted Back into Place

Foreshore Road is closed as a 50 tonne Crane lifts carriages back on to the Central Tramway.

Foreshore Road will be closed to traffic between the Spa Bridge roundabout and the junction with Eastborough for the delivery of the upgraded carriages and chassis.

After celebrating its 140th anniversary last year, the Central Tramway company is investing further in the tramway’s infrastructure, some of which dated back to the early part of the 20th century.

The largest engineering project at the famous cliff railway in over 50 years has seen major refurbishment of the carriages and chassis which date from the 1930's. The new carriages have state-of-the-art emergency brakes, these will be integrated into the computerised control system that was fitted early in 2020. The carriages are being refurbished for the first time since the 1980s.

The initial work involved the removal of the carriages and chassis by a large 50 tonne crane in January.

Today the crane is back on site lifting the carriages back on to the tracks.

Central Tramway say today's work is a major step in the refurbishment works but that the tramway is not quite ready for reopning yet:

"We're not currently able to give a confirmed date for reopening as there is still work to complete on site once the carriages and chassis have been delivered back with us including reattaching cables and calibrating new emergency brake system. Thanks for your continued support and patience. Not long now."
