Three commercial fishing berths have opened up for lease at the recently upgraded South Promenade Boat Compound in Hornsea, presenting a rare opportunity for local and regional fisherfolk.
Commercial fisherfolk in the Hornsea area and from further afield are being encouraged to apply for fishing berths in the town’s boat compound.
Three commercial fishing berths have become available for lease in the South Promenade Boat Compound, in a rare opportunity to support the local fishing industry.
The berths in the compound, provided by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, offer a secure location specially designed to store fishing boats, allow people to land their catch, and are equipped with modern facilities including storage, water and electricity supplies, and offer 24/7 access.
The gated compound was given a £3.5m upgrade in 2020, to increase the size of the yard to allow for bigger and newer boats, offer greater storage for equipment, the installation of a new dedicated maintenance unit for on-site repairs, as well as parking for users, improved security, boat servicing and wash down facilities.
The site also offers convenient and direct access to a slipway for launch and is close to key marine support services and amenities, such as the Hornsea Boat Launching Facilities, Sea Anglers and Hornsea Inshore Rescue.
There is also a free visitor car park and picnic area, as well as improved access to the boathouse and the rest of the promenade.
Filling the berths will give a boost the local economy by attracting commercial fishing operators and related marine businesses to Hornsea, as well as creating and sustaining jobs in fishing and seafood supply chain.
Councillor Barbara Jefferson, the council’s cabinet member for heritage and coastal, said:
“This is a fantastic opportunity for local fishing businesses as these berths don’t become available very often.
"The improved boat compound is an ideal site to support new businesses starting up or existing ones needing more space and the services offered by the site.
“Fishing has always played an important role in the history of Hornsea and its local economy and I’m delighted that continues.”
