Questions After Just 1 of 28 North Yorkshire Funding Bids Succeeds

North Yorkshire County Council is being asked to look at why a number of recent funding bids have been unsuccessful,

The county submitted 28 bids totalling 8.4 million pounds to the governments community renewal fund in June but only one was successful.

Falsgrave and Stepney County Councillor Liz Colling is keen that lessons are learnt.

The 28 bids submitted in June totalled £8.4m. The one successful bid netted £769k for the ‘Delivering a Carbon Negative Energy System in North Yorkshire’ project which will explore opportunities to decarbonise buildings and transport in rural communities in the County.

While a number of North Yorkshire’s neighbouring areas, including County Durham, Darlington, Doncaster and Bradford were classed as high priority areas by the Government for the funding, only Scarborough and Richmondshire districts in the county were identified as being of high priority.

A Government spokesman said it had prioritised places that suffer from weak economic performance and that were less equipped to resist and recover from shocks.

It's thought around £3m of the North Yorkshire bids focused on Scarborough, with £1.9m focused on Richmondshire, £817,000 of proposed schemes based in Craven, £818,000 in Hambleton, £432,000 in Harrogate, £981,000 in Ryedale and £469,000 in Selby.

Liz Colling has asked the council to explain what lessons have been learned ahead a fresh round of funding bids for the Government's "Levelling Up " funding.

The County Council's portfolio holder for growth and economic development is Councillor Derek Bastiman.
