There's been an increase in exclusions from school of primary school children in North Yorkshire.
The authority's Executive Member for Education, Learning and Skills is Annabel Wilkinson:
" There's been a significant rise in recent years in the number of children of primary age that have been excluded from schools in North Yorkshire. Permanent exclusions of primary school children have increased from five children in 21, 22 to 25 pupils in 24 25. And sadly, this is a trend reflected nationally.
"The changes proposed will include low Andre age range, so that the places can be commissioned from existing PIUs to provide tailored support for excluded children and support them to return to mainstream education. There was a consultation that was undertaken between the 22nd of September, the 7th of November to understand views on the potential of lowering the age range of the pupil referral units and views were sought from parents, carers, educational professionals, and the wider community."
The council's recommendation is to provide approval so that the age range of three maintained pupil referral units can be lowered to provide education from five to 16.
Councillor Mark Crane was shocked at the statistics reported:
" I support the recommendation. I'm just shocked at the fact that we've had a fivefold increase in the number of children of that age range, excluded from school. That should concern all of us.
It's unacceptable and. My opinion that, if my child of that age was excluded from school, I'll be looking at myself first of all, because it, and I appreciate it's the national trend as well. I know it's not just in North Yorkshire, but it really is a shocking indictment, I think, on parts of society that we're facing this problem."
