A new scheme to refer children found in possession of drugs into an educational programme rather than the criminal justice system is having an effect according to North Yorkshire Police.
Operation Choice launched in the Autumn, superintendent Fran Naughton from the county's serious organised crime unit says a number of referrals have already been made to the programme:
Sport is also being used to help children at risk of falling in to criminality in North Yorkshire to refocus their efforts.
The stepping up project is using funds seized from criminals to fund a programme of activity for the youngsters.
