Pickering Christmas Lights Switch On Event Called Off

Poor weather conditions have caused the cancellation of the town's lights switch on event.

The Christmas lights switch on event was due to take place on Saturday but following warnings issued by the Met Office the Town Council have decided to call off the event.

In a post on social media the council said:

"Unfortunately we have had to make the very difficult decision to cancel the Christmas Lights Switch On event tomorrow. 

There is a weather warning for heavy rain and 50mph winds, and it is just not safe to operate the fairground rides and set up the stage and electrics.

The event cannot be rescheduled as we need to book the road closure at least three months in advance, and most of the attractions and suppliers for the event are booked in February.

We are very sorry for any disappointment. "

Everyone here was so looking forward to tomorrow and we have worked so hard to prepare for this, but we have to put safety first."

The Met Office have issued a Yellow Warning for Rain and Snow for Saturday and Sunday saying:

"Outbreaks of rain are expected to spread northeastwards on Saturday, preceded by a spell of snow across parts of northern England and Scotland. While snow will increasingly become confined to higher elevations, there is a chance of temporary snowfall at low levels in some areas, including the Vale of York, where accumulations of 5-10 cm are possible before the snow turns back to rain"

A Yellow Warning is also in effect on Saturday for Strong winds with the Met Office saying

"Storm Bert will bring strong winds for a time on Saturday, which may cause some disruption in places"
