OliviaFest Near Pickering Aims To Combat Childhood Cancer

A unique fundraiser takes place near Pickering on Saturday to help with research and treatment for a type of childhood cancer.

The event includes lots for children to enjoy including donkey rides, inflatables, a giant climbing wall, a dog show and animals to handle.

Chloe Mead, the cousin of Olivia May Eyre's Mum, Jemma, is one of the organisers of Olivia Fest:

 "So Olivia was a little girl who passed away last year, last January, aged eight, after a four year battle with a type of cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma. So, yes, very sad. She had lots of treatment- really, really brave all the way through. But yes, sadly she lost her life last January.

"So we are just trying everything we can to raise as much awareness as possible, as much money as possible to fund lots more research and ways to try and hopefully stop this happening one day."

The event takes place from 10am at the NY500 Diner on Malton Road.

Chloe says it's taken some organising:

"Yeah, it's been a bit of a labour of love, but we're on the home stretch now.

"Yeah, it's just a bit of fun for everybody really. Last year we did a really successful bingo event last summer, and we raised about £4,000 and we were so amazed it was so successful, but it was for adults really. So this year we wanted to do something more tailored for the kids.

"So hopefully it'll be loads of fun and just as successful as the Bingo last year."

All money raised will go straight into Olivia's Arc, which is under the umbrella charity Alice's Arc.

The arcs all in the name of different children that have sadly lost their lives to Rhabdomyosarcoma.

Admission is £3 for children £2 for adults with a merchandise stand selling everything from Olivia's Arc tote bags to pens and keyrings.

Olivia's parents, Jemma and Mark are also doing a fundraising skydive on Sunday.
