The North Yorkshire Moors Railway has announced significant service alterations due to essential maintenance work scheduled at Grosmont Station.
The decision, described as "difficult," has resulted in the cancellation of the planned Pickering to Whitby Winter Excursion services, which were set to take place from 27 December to 4 January, along with the Christmas Moorlander Pullman service on 20 December.
A thorough examination of Bridge 42 was carried out in May 2025 as part of the railway's standard structural monitoring. Following an interim inspection this week, the railway has decided to expedite necessary maintenance by three months, with work expected to commence in the New Year.
The specific service changes are as follows:
-
Cancelled Services:
- Pickering to Whitby Winter Excursions
- Christmas North Yorkshire Pullman on 20 December
-
Services Operating as Planned:
- Santa Express services
-
NER Autocar Services:
- Will operate between Pickering and Goathland only, with an updated timetable to be released soon.
-
Other Services:
- Various Christmas North Yorkshire Pullman services, Festive Travel & Treats, GWS Afternoon Tea, and Christmas Charters will operate from Pickering to Goathland return.
Passengers affected by these changes have been contacted directly by the railway's Customer Services team. The railway has expressed its sincere apologies for any inconvenience or disappointment these alterations may cause, urging passengers to check their emails for further information.
