North Yorkshire Council Chief on Whitby Leisure Changes

Sunday, 28 September 2025 06:00

By Andrew Snaith & Joe Willis, LDRS

North Yorkshire Council has announced plans to invest more than £40 million to improve and modernise leisure centres across the county, including in Whitby.

The Everyone Active run centre will be one of four wellbeing hubs in North Yorkshire.

The proposed investment comes after North Yorkshire Council took over the running of leisure services from the former district and borough councils following the launch of the unitary authority in 2023.

Their Head of Sport and Active Wellbeing is Matt Hewison:

"Whitby Leisure Centre was identified as like a strategic site to develop the Wellbeing Hub model that we have, and with that obviously is the spokes as well. So we've identified some community facilities in Whitby that will will create a spoke, so it's Sport Mulgrave, Whitby School, those kinds of places where we know that there's a similar offer and we can work more closely with them in delivering the health and wellbeing and the sport wellbeing offer."

A further £3 million pounds would be used to update gym and fitness equipment across 12 leisure sites operated by the authority.

Pool accessibility would be improved including facilities for people with additional needs, and improved reception areas and public spaces.

Matt added:

"So yeah, the potential investment in Whitby is probably, needed. It's been a facility as the wet side was early seventies. Dry side was early 2000s. So it's probably getting to that stage now where a lot of public leisure buildings show a bit of sign of tiredness so yeah, it's really positive that we've got that hopefully to take forwards. Whitby Leisure Centre is a great facility and there's so much more we can do there, not through the, not just gym and swim, but the community clubs and everyone else that serves there."
