North Yorkshire's Chief Constable has responded to an official inspection that found the county's police force needing improvement in four separate areas and inadequate in one.
His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary Fire and Rescue Service (HMICFRS) published the report of its PEEL Inspection of North Yorkshire Police on Friday. The PEEL inspection covers the areas of Effectiveness, Efficiency and Legitimacy across a number of sub-headings. The inspection was completed in October 2022.
HMICFRS has confirmed their grading of North Yorkshire Police performance as follows:

| Responding to the public | Requires Improvement |
| Investigating crime | Requires Improvement |
| Protecting vulnerable people | Requires Improvement |
| Managing offenders and suspects | Adequate |
| Building, supporting and protecting the workforce | Requires Improvement |
| Strategic planning, organisational management and value for money | Inadequate |
Lisa Winward says that changes are being made as a result of the inspection but adds the force is performing.
North Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner has also been giving her response to the poor report.
Police and Crime Commissioner Zoe Metcalfe has been keen to point out the inspection relates to the police force and not her office.
The commissioner says she supports the force but expects the Chief Constable to make improvements ahead of the next report later this year.
Chief Constable Lis Winward says the force were aware of some of their shortcomings before the inspectors arrived and actually highlighted some issues to the inspection team.
The Chief says the force received initial feedback from the inspectors last October and that a number of changes have been actioned since then.
