North Yorkshire Charity in Name Change

They say it's to reflect a new approach to community support in Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale.

Local charity, Advocacy Alliance say they've been making sure people have access to the support they need, providing community advocacy throughout the area and championing individuals, supporting them to have their voice heard.

With advocacy at it's core, the organisation continues to develop their community services – as such, they have taken the decision to refresh their brand entirely to become Help Hub.

Their chief executive is Helen Beavers:

"Advocacy Alliance has been going for over 30 years, providing help and support for the local community. What we found was that people didn't know what we were, or misunderstood, or thought we were like an insurance company or a solicitors and we're not any of that. We're advocacy and speak up for people who can't speak up for themselves.

"So we did a lot of consultation with the public and key stakeholders, including funders, local organizations, the local community and asked them what they thought we should be called and we ended up coming up with the name Help Hub, with the tagline, Your Voice Matters."

They say this new focus means a greater leaning towards work within the community, building and strengthening connections with existing partner organisations, Help Hub aims to provide new community opportunities in under-served areas within Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale.

Helen further clarified the reason for the name change:

" Because what we found was the people who knew what advocacy was would choose Your Voice Matters, but people who didn't know what advocacy was, would choose Help Hub, and they're the people we want to make more aware of who we are and what we can do.

"The development of it, the Help Hub is to look at becoming more community-based, providing more community services, being more accessible to people offering new volunteering opportunities, helping people on a day-to-day basis, and linking them to other organisations.

"We could do complaints at elements of housing and benefits, but we can't do the actual application forms or actually building houses."

Not only does Help Hub bring with it a new name, but also a new website and a new look – they say their dedication to putting individuals first still remains the same. For more information, visit www.helphubyorkshire.org.uk or call 01723 363 910.
