A vacant Scarborough town centre building will be converted into a café and a residential property following the approval of plans.
The plan to convert the former Aladdin’s Cave at 27 Huntriss Row into a café and a flat on the upper floors has received the green light from North Yorkshire Council.
The three-storey Georgian building has a commercial premises on the ground floor, which will become a café with seating and will also offer hot food takeaways.
The residential unit will be accommodated over the first, second, and third floors to provide a two-bed maisonette.
The scheme was amended during the course of the application and was readvertised publicly and did not receive any comments from members of the public.
Opening hours from 11am to 11pm daily were proposed, but officers ruled that the café should be open during the “core hours” of 11am to 5pm.
Planners said: “Huntriss Row is predominantly commercial in character with cafes, restaurants, hotels, shops and banks with some residential units occupying upper floor levels.
“The existing shop front is proposed to be modified to accommodate a new entrance door to serve the maisonette above, allowing direct access from Huntriss Row.”
A café seating area and WC will be located in the front section of the building, with a commercial kitchen and store at the rear.
Officers said the development would contribute to the vitality and viability of Huntriss Row, a “primary retail street” within the town centre.
They also noted that the property, which is in the Scarborough conservation area, would be visually improved as a result of the scheme.
North Yorkshire Council approved the application for the café and ancillary hot food takeaway, subject to conditions.
