The North York Moors National Park Authority says it's keeping a close eye on the slowdown of development work at Whitby's Woodsmith Mine.
Mine owner - Anglo American - is slowing the pace of construction as part of a major restructuring of it's business.
Director of Corporate Services - Ian Nicholls says the National Park has taken the unusual step of increasing the level of risk it has assigned to the project from medium to high.
A report presented to Authority members said that there is a potential risk to the organisation relating to the implementation of planning decisions and the deployment of Section 106 funding, the report describes the risk as:
"Failure to maintain effective working relationships with the developers, including timely engagement at a senior level, with adverse consequences for the delivery of efficient relationship management and corresponding adverse impact on the resources required to be deployed by the Authority to achieve appropriate regulatory oversight of the developments and the delivery of appropriate and timely mitigation and compensation actions through planning conditions and Section 106. Changes to the development programme and the wider commercial context may result in financial implications to the Authority. A corresponding reputational risk may also arise"
The change to the assessed risk level comes as part of a quarterly review of the authorities risk register.
As part of the review the North York Moors National Park Authority says it is coping with additional pressures on it's budget.
The authority has seen no increase in the core national park grant it receives from the government this year.
Director of Corporate Services - Ian Nicholls says they are looking at ways of increasing funding from other sources and managing budgets.
The authority says it's financial risk is well managed and progress against it's planned actions is "as expected".
