Scarborough and Whitby's MP has praised the county's fire service after visiting the site of the Langdale Moor fire.
Fire-fighters from North Yorkshire Fore and Rescue service remain at the scene of the incident on Langdale Moor near Flylingdales a week and half after the fire was first reported.
The Fire service report that three fire engines were on site overnight last night. They say that partner agencies, farmers, gamekeepers and contractors are assisting with putting fire breaks in around the fire.
The fire service say:
"We continue to ask people to avoid the area where the fire is but the rest of the National Park remains open.
Our advice remains to keep doors and windows shut if you’re affected by smoke."
Today Scarborough and Whitby MP, Alison Hume, and the Deputy Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, Jo Coles, visited the scene of the fire.
Alison Hume said:
"This morning, I visited the scene of the Langdale Moor major incident fire, which is still on-going.
Crews from Scarborough, Whitby and other stations are still there, performing incredible work in the most challenging of environments. They are expected to be on site for weeks to come.
With RAF Fylingdales and an old army range located nearby, there are exploding munitions in the area which makes an already difficult situation even more complex.
The MOD’s Fire Service, Forestry England and private contractors are also involved in the operation, dampening the land and scraping trenches and fire breaks.
Due to the unpredictability of moorland fire which has taken hold deep in the peat and which can burn undetected under the surface only to pop up again, crews will be needed for weeks."
The MP praised the response from all the partners involved in tackling the incident and thanked the people involved.
"Together with Jo Coles, Deputy Mayor for Policing, Fire and Crime for York and North Yorkshire, I want to thank North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service's Area Manager Ben Illsley, Incident Manager Marc Warren and their colleagues for the briefing and visit.
It was important I visited to thank the crews who are keeping us safe and to better understand the situation. As far as holding the fire back from jumping the track and heading towards the critical early warning defence system I know the firefighters at the start of last week did a particularly heroic job.
It’s clear that the crews are tired so keeping up morale and good welfare are issues I know the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are alive to.
