More Local Workers for "On-Track" Whitby Polyhalite Mine

Anglo American says it's on track to hit the production start date at Whitby's Woodsmith Mine.

The Woodsmith Mine project near Whitby is on track to start producing Polyhalite in 2027.

In an update to Whitby Town Council this week - Anglo American's Matt Parsons said the tunnel boring and shaft sinking work is going well.

Matt Parsons says that the team are currently on track to start actual production of Polyhalite in three years time.

Matt Parsons says recent recruitment events have seen more local people joining the mine team with 200 Whitby residents now working on the project.

Anglo American has reported an increase in its contribution to the regional economy over the last year through the Woodsmith Project.

In 2023 the company says that the project generated an additional £305 million to the region’s economy, bringing the total contribution to £1.5 billion since construction started in 2017.

The project is now employing over 1,400 local people, which is 70% of the total workforce, far exceeding what was expected at this point in construction.
