Healthy eating could be one tool to help tackle Obesity in the Scarborough Borough.
The latest numbers say that 65% of adults in the borough are technically overweight, that's slightly more than the national average.
The proportion of children in Reception who are overweight or obese in Scarborough is significantly higher than England at 26% locally versus 22% nationally.
Scarborough and Whitby MP Robert Goodwill thinks doing more to encourage people to grow their own food might be useful.
The figures were presented to county councillors in a recent report on health and social care needs in Scarborough.
The report states:
Childhood obesity is closely related to excess weight in adulthood. The proportion of children in Reception who are overweight or obese in Scarborough is significantly higher than England (26.0% locally, 22.6% nationally). However, for year 6 children Scarborough has a rate which is similar to England (32.8% locally, 34.3% nationally). There is an increase in the proportion of obese children from Reception to Year 6 in Scarborough, highlighting that it is important to identify children at risk for excess weight early on and minimise excessive weight gain through primary school.
Eastfield Councillor, Tony Randerson says part of the solution should be encouraging more healthy eateries.
