The first cohort of Scarborough’s Mini Police from Thomas Hinderwell Academy has successfully completed their programme.
Prison, community service and a large fine was on the agenda of the Mini Police from Thomas Hinderwell Academy last week as the first cohort passed out.
Mini Police has been created to form a partnership between local police and primary schools through fun and interactive engagements.
PCSO Janine Tate has created the first Mini Police programme within Scarborough, which will lead the way for other schools to follow.
Different topics have been taught to the pupils and they have been able to interact with Police Volunteers, members of the Community Safety Hub and other officers who have played various roles to assist in the development of the pupils.
One of the lessons taught the children about identifying dangers whilst on the street. In the most recent interaction, the pupils engaged with a driver suspected of drink-driving. The pupils were involved in the process which took the driver to court.
For the final interaction, the Mini Police held a court in the Council Chambers at the Town Hall. Each pupil played a part within the court, reading out statements and making decisions as to the verdict. The defendant was one of the Community Safety Hub partners who has also been involved with teaching pupils about the dangers of drugs and alcohol at Crucial Crew recently.
The Mini Police officers were then presented with a certificate and a medal at the end of the proceedings in the Town Hall by North Yorkshire Police Superintendent Rachel Wood, watched on by parents and relatives.
PCSO Tate said,
"It has been a fantastic programme with the pupils, they have been so enthusiastic and wanting to be involved. I would like to thank Thomas Hinderwell Academy for working in partnership to help this happen, with a special thanks to the Deputy Head, Holly, for all her assistance. I am already looking forward to next year's intake!"
Superintendent Wood, Senior Operational Commander for the Coast said,
"This is a fantastic piece of work which PCSO Tate has put together with Thomas Hinderwell Academy. It is clear that she has worked tirelessly with this cohort of these young people over the last 8 weeks, and it was fantastic to see the result of her efforts. It really helps the pupils to build trust and confidence in the Police and to break down barriers."
