The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice across parts of North Yorkshire, starting at 10:00 am on Monday, 18 November 2024 and lasting until 10:00 am on Tuesday, 19 November 2024.
The Met Office warns that there is a "small chance of disruption from snow and ice". The most likely scenario is for the majority of snow to fall on higher ground, with accumulations of 5 to 10 cm possible above 300 metres and potentially 15 to 20 cm above 400 metres. While less likely, there is also a chance of snow settling at lower levels, which could lead to more significant disruption.
The Met Office advises residents to be prepared for the potential impacts of snow and ice, including:
- Power cuts and disruption to services such as mobile phone coverage.
- Untreated pavements and cycle paths becoming impassable.
- Rural communities becoming cut off.
- Delays and cancellations to bus and train services, as well as road closures and longer journey times.
- Injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.
- Travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.
To mitigate these risks, the Met Office recommends:
- Planning routes in advance and checking for delays and closures, amending travel plans if necessary.
- Allowing extra time to prepare vehicles and check conditions before setting off.
- Packing essential items in case of delays, such as warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, ice scraper/de-icer, a warning triangle, high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger.
- Preparing in advance for power cuts and potential disruption to services by gathering items such as torches, batteries, and a mobile phone power bank.
- Staying updated with the latest weather forecasts and warnings.
The Met Office emphasizes that the warning has a "very low likelihood" but a "medium impact". They urge residents to stay informed and take appropriate precautions to ensure their safety during this period of potentially disruptive weather.
