Frack Free Coastal Communities and Frack Free Scarborough are urging residents to join them on a march through Burniston in a show of opposition to Europa Oil & Gas’s plans to drill for gas under local villages.
Organisers say Saturday's event will also mobilise people to register their objections to the application with North Yorkshire Council’s planning committee. It is backed by York City Unison, Parents For Future UK, Scarborough Green Party, York City Unison, Scarborough Unity, Social Justice Party Scarborough, Friends of the Earth and York Trades Council.
Chris Garforth from Frack Free Coastal Communities said:
The oil and gas company Europa UK say:
'Europa’s Cloughton project application at Burniston Mill is only seeking permission for site construction, drilling, testing, and the subsequent restoration of the site and agricultural land to its former condition.
The appraisal drilling will enable the project partners to know if the gas contained in the underground reservoir can be extracted at sufficient rates to make it commercially viable for production. If the appraisal is successful, any production phase would be subject to a separate planning application at a later stage.'
Chris also states:
John Atkinson from Frack Free Scarborough said:
“We can’t just rely on the planning process to protect us. It’s vital we back up individual objections with a collective show of opposition on the streets and within our organisations. We intend to be a force that can’t be ignored.”
Chris added:
March and photocall
o Meet: 1 pm, Saturday 22 March, Burniston & Cloughton Village Hall, YO13 0HJ
o March: to the entrance of the proposed drill site, Coastal Road, Burniston, YO13 0DB
o Rally and photocall: 2 pm at the Grain Store, opposite Burniston Garden Centre, Coastal Road, Burniston, YO13 0DB
Frack Free Coastal Communities was formed by residents of the coastal villages north of Scarborough in 2024. They say their aim is to give voice to local opposition to drilling and fracking for gas in the area.
Frack Free Scarborough was established over a decade ago to fight the threat of fracking across the UK, including at Kirby Misperton just outside Pickering. The group say they actively opposes oil and gas exploration in the interests of a liveable planet.
