Lung Cancer Screening Gets Underway in Bridlington

Natalie Garnett, Lead Nurse on the programme, with Graham Brookes, the very first person to be scanned in Bridlington, alongside members of the screening team.

Bridlington's first Lung Cancer Screening scans took place just outside Bridlington Hospital yesterday.

The screening scans are being conducted in a new mobile CT scanning unit parked up at the Hospital site.

The new programme is being rolled out in phases to past and current smokers aged 55 to 74 who are registered with a Bridlington GP.

Natalie Garnett, Lead Nurse on the programme said:

"If you’re eligible, you’ll receive a letter inviting you to book a free telephone assessment with a specially trained respiratory nurse.

Some people will then be offered a quick, painless low-dose CT scan onboard a high-tech mobile unit parked just outside the hospital."

Graham Bookes was  the very first person to be scanned in Bridlington yesterday, he said:

"I was very happy to be told I was the first patient to take part in the Lung Cancer Screening programme locally.

"The whole experience was very easy, and free, and painless. I'd urge anyone who gets an invite and is offered an appointment to make sure they attend, because they could save your life by detecting lung cancer, or another disease, quicker than you may have found out otherwise. Which means you're more likely to survive."

Lung Cancer Screening helps spot lung cancer and other lung conditions early – often before symptoms appear – and when treatment has the best chance of success.
