Plans have been submitted for a 3 metre wide LED screen outside a Whitby amusement arcade.
Mark Miller has applied for permission to North Yorkshire Council to install a replacement illuminated sign on the side elevation of the Funland Amusements building in Pier Road, Whitby.
The proposed LED screen would be 3 metres long and 2 metres high and would be formed from modular panels arranged six by and four units.
A submitted plan states:
“While the proposed sign is larger than the previous illuminated display, the increase in size does not detract from the character or appearance of the conservation area.”
The property, at 24 Pier Road in Whitby, forms part of the Funland Amusements building, which “sits directly onto the footway and forms part of a long run of amusement arcades, cafés and seafront attractions that create a lively and active frontage along this section of the harbour”.
The applicant said:
“This part of Pier Road experiences high levels of footfall throughout the year and has a long-established commercial seaside character.
“The site lies within the Whitby conservation area, where the significance of the area is derived from the historic seafront, commercial frontages and longstanding leisure activity.
“Pier Road has, for generations, been characterised by amusement buildings, commercial frontages and active, brightly presented façades serving visitors to the harbour.”
The plan submitted to the council concludes:
“The replacement sign continues a pattern of signage that has existed on this building for over 100 years, with illumination forming part of the building’s identity since the 1980s.
“Although larger than the most recent sign, the proposal reflects the scale and commercial character of the wider seafront and preserves the appearance of the Whitby conservation area.”
A date for deciding on the proposal has not been set by the council.
