As the festive season approaches, North Yorkshire Police have intensified their efforts to combat drink and drug driving, resulting in 35 arrests within the first 12 days of their Christmas campaign.
The campaign aims to deter individuals from driving under the influence, with a clear message: “There is absolutely no excuse for drink and drug driving.” Increased patrols have been implemented, with officers working around the clock to identify offenders.
Of the 35 arrests made so far:
- 19 were for alcohol-related driving offences
- 16 for drug driving offences
- The arrests included 32 men and three women
- Ten individuals arrested were aged 25 and under, while nine were aged between 26 and 35, twelve between 36 and 45, and four were aged between 46 and 60.
Inspector Clive Turner from the Roads Policing Group emphasised the importance of education in preventing these offences. He stated,
“Our preferred option is to educate people about the risks which we try to do via the public campaign messaging and talks.”
“Sadly, though enforcement is the only option for some people. There is no let-up, we will be back out this weekend utilising our intelligence systems ensuring that we are in the hotspot areas to target those who drink or drug drive.”
He also noted that the campaign's launch video, which highlights the severe consequences of impaired driving, has garnered nearly 100,000 views.
The police have been conducting roadside checkpoints across the region. These checkpoints are strategically placed at various times to maximise their effectiveness.
Inspector Turner warned about the dangers of being over the limit the morning after a night out, stating,
“Many people fall foul of still being over the limit… Do not take the risk – there is no excuse; it’s not worth it.”
The campaign is not only about enforcement but also about encouraging responsible behaviour during the festive period. The message to the public is clear: if you have been drinking or taking drugs, do not get behind the wheel.
As the holiday season continues, North Yorkshire Police say they remain vigilant, promising to return to hotspot areas to ensure the safety of all road users. The police urge everyone to make the right decision and get home safely this Christmas, reminding them that the choices made can have life-altering consequences.
