Importance of Whitby Swing Bridge Highlighted

The importance of Whitby Swing bridge to the town has been highlighted as it becomes stuck again.

Engineers are due in Whitby today to try and fix the towns swing bridge which became stuck on Sunday.

It follows a number of incidents over the summer when the bridge broke down.

County Councillor Janet Jefferson has called on council engineers to recognise the importance of the bridge to the town.

There were a number of technical failures at the bridge over the summer months.

That lead local county councillors to question what would happen if the bridge needed replacing.

North Yorkshire's bridge Manager Phil Robinson doesn't think replacement will be needed anytime soon.

The Swing Bridge was built in 1909 and mechanised in 1983. The county council says that failures of the bridge operation have been reduced from twenty plus per year to approximately four per year since 2012. They say it is likely that some of the recent closures have involved extremely high temperatures which prevented the bridge opening

The council's bridge experts believe the bridge should have a remaining operating life of around 75 years.
