The oldest Pullman dining carriage on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is welcoming passengers once again following a ten-year restoration project.
Diners will step back in time aboard a fully restored 1928 railway carriage as it returns to the tracks following a ten-year refurbishment project.
The historic Pullman Car 79 is welcoming passengers for autumn services through the North York Moors, offering a three-course Yorkshire meal in the oldest dining coach of its kind.
Railway enthusiasts and food lovers alike will be the first to experience the refurbished carriage, which is the only remaining example of its type.
Built nearly a century ago, the carriage was originally part of an order for twenty-nine cars.
These vehicles made history as the first British Pullmans constructed entirely from steel for use on the London and North Eastern Railway.
The carriage operated on various Pullman services across the rail network until its retirement in 1965.
Preservation efforts began in 1973 when the vehicle was donated to the South Yorkshire Area Group of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
The long task of restoration commenced shortly after, before the car eventually moved to the heritage line in May 1990.
Extensive craftsmanship has gone into returning the carriage to its former glory over the last decade.
Engineers and restoration specialists have completed major roof repairs, including the installation of entirely new roof side panels.
The mechanical underpinnings have also been completely overhauled, alongside extensive bodywork repairs.
The interior has seen significant attention, with a full electrical rewire, intricate marquetry repairs, and fresh varnishing.
Passengers will now enjoy newly replaced floors, carpets, and upholstery as they travel through the stunning moorland scenery.
The carriage is currently operating on the Autumn Pullman services, which will run until the fourth of November.
Railway officials have also confirmed that despite the recent decade-long project, the carriage is scheduled for another full overhaul in 2026.
Chief Executive Officer at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, Laura Strangeway, said:
"Car 79 is a truly special part of the NYMR heritage, so it’s incredibly exciting to see this beautifully restored carriage return to service.
The scale and craftsmanship involved in the project has been remarkable, and we’re so glad passengers can now experience it for themselves.
The Autumn Pullman services are the perfect opportunity to step back in time whilst travelling on history through the stunning Moors - we hope diners will enjoy the unique character of Car 79 as much as we do."
