Have Your Say on Whitby's Housing Strategy

Whitby residents are being encouraged to have their say on the state of housing in the town.

You can have your say in shaping Whitby's housing strategy.

North Yorkshire council is currently consulting on a draft housing strategy.

Whitby councillor, Neil Swannick, says issues with short term lets and parking are among the issues being raised along with environmental concerns.

Councillor Swannick says that the number of Short term lets in Whitby continues to be a major issue for the local housing market.

He's encouraging residents to take part in a public consultation on a new Draft Housing Strategy for North Yorkshire which he says doesn't focus enough on the letting situation.

The council says the aim for the new draft housing strategy is to deliver:

‘Good quality, affordable and sustainable homes that meet the needs of all of our communities.’

The final strategy will provide a framework for the housing policies and projects that North Yorkshire Council will carry out in the next five years.

The strategy includes proposals to:

  •     tackle homelessness
  •     meet the needs of the ageing population
  •     increase the supply of affordable and available housing
  •     reduce fuel poverty
  •     decarbonise homes
  •     bring long term empty properties back into use

The council says it's ambition is to help the development of at least 12,685 new homes, based on existing Local Plan commitments, of which at least 4010 will be affordable.
