Further Ice Warning for Yorkshire Coast Brings More School Changes

Residents along the Yorkshire Coast and the broader Yorkshire and Humber region have been advised to prepare for icy conditions tonight as the Met Office issues a yellow weather warning.

The alert, which is in place from 18:00 today until 11:00 tomorrow, warns of clearing skies and scattered wintry showers that are expected to create icy patches on various surfaces,.

Several schools in the area have already announced plans for Wednesday with some remaining closed and a number of others opening later than usual.

You can see an up to date list of the closures at  https://www.thisisthecoast.co.uk/local-info/school-closures/

The Met Office has categorised this specific yellow warning as having a "high likelihood" but a "low impact". Despite the low impact rating, the following disruptions are anticipated:

  • Potential injuries from slips and falls on icy or untreated surfaces,.
  • Icy patches on untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths, making travel hazardous.
  • A "fresh dusting of snow" in select locations as wintry showers move through.

The warning covers a wide geographical area, with the Yorkshire & Humber region specifically highlighting several local authorities. These include the East Riding of Yorkshire, Kingston upon Hull, North Yorkshire, and North East Lincolnshire, alongside North Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, and York.

Official Advice for Residents To manage the risks associated with the freeze, experts suggest planning ahead. The Met Office recommends leaving the house at least five minutes earlier than usual to avoid the need to rush, which significantly reduces the risk of accidents,.

For those commuting, it is advised to stick to main roads where possible, as these are more likely to have been treated with salt or grit,. Pedestrians and cyclists are encouraged to use pavements along these main routes for better grip,. Drivers should also check road conditions and bus or train timetables before setting off to identify any potential delays,.

Looking Ahead While the immediate concern is ice, the weather remains unsettled. A separate yellow warning has been issued for later in the week as Storm Goretti is expected to bring heavy snow and strong winds to parts of the UK between Thursday and Friday, although currently this does not include the Yorkshire Coast. Officials urge the public to stay up to date with the latest forecasts, as weather warnings can change quickly,.
