The Scarborough Borough now has the lowest seven day infection rate in North Yorkshire but the situation remains serious.
The latest COVID seven day infection rate numbers show the Scarborough Borough has 240 cases for every 100,000 people. That's down from 281 yesterday.
The number for the Borough is now the lowest in the county, which is in sharp contrast to early December when the area was consistently the highest in North Yorkshire.
There are concerns though that the new variant of the disease has yet to have it's full effect in the Scarborough Borough. As we reported yesterday the proportion of positive tests in the borough that are from the new more transmissible variant is significantly lower than elsewhere in the county.

The county as a whole now has an infection rate of 380, the all England average is 582.
Amanda Bloor from the NHS in Noth Yorkshire says the situation remains serious with the numbers of people being treated for COVID in the county's hospitals continuing to increase and some planned operations are now being postponed.
