Flood Alerts Issued for Yorkshire Coast

Flood Alerts have been issued for the entire Yorkshire Coastline from Whitby to Bridlington and for the Upper River Derwent.

Two flood alerts have been issued for the Yorkshire Coastline

The first stretched from Whitby to Filey as overtopping waves and spray are expected on high tides at Scarborough. The particular area of concern is North Bay and Marine & Royal Albert Drive. Particular times of concern are on Sunday 07/02/21, from 1am until 4am, and from 2pm until 5pm.

The Environment Agency ask people to stay away from seafront areas, large waves can be dangerous.

The second alert for the North Sea Coast at Bridlington is in force as overtopping waves and spray are expected on high tides at Bridlington from Saturday 06/02/2021 until Monday 08/02/2021. Particular areas of concern are the seafront areas at North Pier, South Pier and the promenade around the Lifeboat station. Particular times of concern are from 11pm on Saturday until 6am on Sunday, from midday on Sunday until 6pm on Sunday, and from midnight on Sunday until 8am on Monday.

A separate alert has been issued for the Upper River Derwent as river levels remain high on the Derwent in response to recent rainfall.

Flooding of property, roads and farmland remains possible. Areas most at risk are low lying land and roads around the Low Marishes and Malton area. Levels at Malton are forecast to remain high during today, 6/2/21 before starting to rise from midnight tonight with an expected peak of between 4.1 to 4.2m on Sunday evening, 7/2/21. Further rain is forecast throughout today turning to snow later in the evening, which will keep river levels high. Pumping operations continue in Old Malton, Malton, and Norton, to manage the impact of groundwater and surface water in the area. High groundwater levels are expected to continue until the end of February 2021
