Zoo keepers had an extra reason to celebrate this Mother’s Day with the arrival of a six-foot tall bundle of joy!
In the early hours of Sunday morning, 9-year-old Savannah, a Rothschild’s giraffe, welcomed her second calf, the first giraffe born at the zoo in six years.
First-time dad Albert, who arrived last September as part of the EAZA Ex-Situ Programme (EEP), is already making his mark, with keepers confirming the newborn is a healthy baby boy.
The new arrival has been named Meet Kijana, which is Swahili for ‘young man’
After spending some quality bonding time with his mum, he’s now out exploring with the herd.
Flamingo Land say:
"With fewer than 1,400 Rothschild’s giraffes left in the wild, every birth is a milestone in conservation.
And guess what? More baby giraffes could be on the way!"
