Five Rescued from Rip Current by Cayton Bay RNLI Lifeguards

RNLI Lifeguards on the Yorkshire Coast have had a busy weekend with good weather and consistent surf making for busy beaches.

The Cayton Bay lifeguards rescued three people from a rip current and assisted two more to shore at around 2pm on Sunday.

Lifeguard Bryan Hogg was on a water patrol heading towards the south side of the red and yellow flags to a pair of surfers caught in a rip current when Senior Lifeguard Dom Morris noticed a group of three swimmers near the rocks at the north get caught off guard by a flash rip and taken beyond standing depth in breaking surf. Lifeguard Ed Broadbent was helping clear surfers from the red and yellow flags and was immediately tasked to the three swimmers struggling.

Both lifeguards headed 300m north of their position by foot and board. Fortunately a nearby surfer was able to provide support to the swimmers helping them stay afloat whilst the lifeguards got to them.  As the lifeguards reached them two bodyboarders had also found themselves in the same rip. The lifeguards returned all five casualties to shore, whilst Lifeguard supervisor Andy Hogg was at base on coms which allowed Lifeguard Morris to take the medical bag down to the shore as the casualties were returned, providing first aid checks and reassuring all casualties.

The Lifeguard supervisor was able to provide base observation and communications during the incident. The three swimmers were in dire circumstances and the quick actions of the team and the surfer saved their lives.

The lifeguard team are asking people to always swim between the Red and Yellow flags which is a designated safe swim area, and always watched over by lifeguard teams.
