A seafront fish and chip shop, café, and public toilet is set to be demolished in Filey.
A set of kiosks, a café, and a public toilet building at the Southern end of a sea-facing promenade in Filey is due to be demolished by the council over fears it could collapse.
The Royal Parade building is unstable and at risk of structural failure, North Yorkshire Council (NYC) said, with councillors set to approve the demolition at a meeting on Thursday, August 20.
The site is owned and operated by North Yorkshire Council, which said the land would be levelled and noted that there are no plans for the redevelopment of the site submitted as part of the demolition application.
The commercial units are currently occupied by a fish and chips outlet, a café, an ice cream outlet, and a retail unit.
A structural survey carried out this spring described the building as being in poor condition with “considerable structural damage”, and parts were said to be “unstable and at risk of structural failure”.
The report concluded that the building is experiencing significant differential settlement but did not specifically recommend that the entirety of the site should be demolished.
However, planners said there were “clearly substantial structural issues, and immediate mitigation measures are required to secure the building”.
They added that demolition of the entire property would improve the appearance of the area and provide an opportunity to enhance the area in the future “through a sympathetic redevelopment of the site, which is the council’s intention”.
The site also contains a Yorkshire Water pumping station, which is described as being in poor condition.
While the council said it had previously spoken with Yorkshire Water about removing it and relocating elsewhere on the site, no such relocation is proposed within this application.
Members of the Thirsk and Malton Area Planning Committee are set to discuss the scheme at a meeting on Thursday, August 20.
