Councillors will decide whether a new Filey ice cream parlour should be granted an alcohol licence despite objections.
The owner has applied for an alcohol licence seeking permission to serve alcohol seven days a week at the Curlew Gelato Lounge on 32 Belle Vue Street, Filey.
Councillors will meet on Wednesday, June 19, to discuss the proposal and an objection lodged by a local resident.
If approved, the sale of alcohol would be permitted from 11am to 10.30pm from Monday to Sunday.
However, a neighbour has said that the sale of alcohol and “late opening hours” until 11pm could lead to rowdiness and disturbances.
The objector said:
“Our only entrance is on the back street which is not very well lit at night as there is only one street lamp down the whole street.
“We have two children aged eight and 13 years old, and the younger one has been diagnosed with ADHD and is awaiting autism and sensory assessments”.
They also noted that one of the children’s bedroom windows is “right above the back entrance where I heard they are planning to have a seating area”.
The neighbour added:
“It will be hell on a night – not only is it too dark to see anything but we don’t want drunk people hanging around, especially in front of my child’s bedroom window.”
The property was previously a Boots pharmacy and in March the council approved its conversion into an ice cream parlour with outdoor seating.
Conversion of the first, second, and third floors into holiday apartments was also approved.
When the council’s licensing sub-committee meets it can choose to grant the licence, add additional conditions alongside approval, or reject the whole or part of the application.
The meeting will be held at Scarborough Town Hall at 10am on June 19 and is open to members of the public.
