Farm Vehicles and Deliberate Fires Caused July's Heatwave Fire Spike in North Yorkshire

July's heatwave lead to a big increase in fires in North Yorkshire with a spike leading the fire service to instigate it's major incident plan.

The fire and rescue service says it dealt with over 230 fires in the open in July.

Head of Assurance - James Manning - says a significant number were set deliberately.

On July 19th the fire service put its major incident plan into force as it dealt with multiple fires in the open.

Head of Assurance - James Manning - says analysis of the fires found that farm equipment was often involved in starting the fires.

James says that the major incident plan is well rehearsed and makes sure there is enough capacity to deal with a large number of simultaneous incidents.
