Councillors in the East Riding have given their views on bin changes they say have been forced following government policy changes.
Councillor David Nolan says the East Riding has often led the way in recycling:
"We are certainly at the top end of the recycling councils. What is sad about this is it's a top down decision and I'm sure you'd agree with me, that it doesn't actually meet the East Riding's needs.
"We're being forced to do this. What is disappointing is the media. Have just simply recycled government, uh, handouts, um, now came in flats. There may will be a need for, for weekly collection of brown waste, and that could have been dealt with. But what seems sad is our trials are showing that this is not really helping the East Riding. Perhaps an emphasis on the blue and the green collection as, as he alluded to, would've been a better way for, for this to be dealt with.
"But I would just ask that, could we try and make it clear to our residents that this is not something the East Riding chose to do. It was forced to do it for by a top down decision."
He was addressing councillor Paul West, who is East Riding Council's cabinet member for environment and transport, admitted these were big changes:
"Yeah, I couldn't agree more. Really. I think it's all, it's fair to say really that within the east riding, everyone recognised that we have a very good system.
"And I've had for many years, and you're right, that unfortunately with a blanket policy, that government have implemented it. It catches all, doesn't it really? And the way that it's worked, there's been no mechanism for us to be exempt from that. I can understand in, in terms of a government decision, it's easy to do a blanket policy, but if they've done a blanket policy, they might have looked at us and used our model instead.
"But you are right. I think a lot of this has been driven by the sort of the more highly dense urban areas where local authorities have took decisions to collect green bins less and less. And this local author is always maintaining a really good service. So yeah, I think in this case we have.
"We have unfortunately been caught out by it really."
