Seaside shops on the Yorkshire Coast are being asked not to sell flying ring toys, because they can harm animals like seals.
East Riding Councillor Linda Johnson says solid frisbees, with no gap in the middle to trap animals, are fine.
She says bans have been enacted by other councils:
Councillor Jayne Phoenix proposed a motion to East Riding Council that stated:
"This Council: Notes with concern the instances of seals sustaining death and serious injury through strangulation caused by plastic flying rings left on beaches after people have been playing with them.
This council further notes that many major retailers including coastal branches of Asda, Tesco and Pets at Home have removed these items from their stores.
This council resolves to ask our communications and media team to raise awareness with the public of the harm that these objects cause to sea creatures and to encourage independent retailers to follow the example of the major supermarket chains and not stock them"
The motion received the backing of council members.
