Do You Really Need to Visit the Recycling Centre this Easter?

North Yorkshire residents are being asked to think twice about whether they need to make a trip to their local household waste recycling centre over the Easter bank holiday weekend.

While North Yorkshire County Council’s 20 recycling sites have stayed open during the lockdown, a queuing system is in place to meet social distancing guidance. This has resulted in tailbacks at some sites recently and there are concerns that these queues could be longer over Easter.

County Councillor Andrew Lee, Executive Member for Open to Business, said:

“We expect the HWRCs to be extremely busy over the holiday weekend, as Easter is always a busy time. Given the rules in place to ensure the sites can operate safely, this will inevitably lead to queues.

“We’re asking people to consider whether they really need to visit their HWRC this weekend. Could you keep the waste at home for another week or so and take it at a less busy time? If you can, you’ll benefit by most likely having a quicker, easier trip when you do visit and you’ll be helping the sites to carry on running safely and smoothly.”

The current rules at HWRCs mean that to maintain social distancing, staff will not be able to help customers dispose of waste, so if you do visit take only what you can manage yourself.

From April, HWRCs will be on their summer opening hours, 8.30am to 5pm every day except Wednesdays. Find details of HWRCs near you and of the Covid-19 rules under which they currently operate at www.northyorks.gov.uk/household-waste-recycling-centres
