Date Set for Bridlington North By-election

A by election to fill an East Riding Council seat in Bridlington is set to be held next month.

East Riding Council has called for candidates to submit their nomination papers to stand in Bridlington North for the by election, set to be held on Thursday, June 30.

Nomination papers must be delivered to the Council’s County Hall headquarters in Beverley by no later than 4pm on Wednesday, June 1.

The by election follows the death of Conservative Cllr Chad Chadwick of liver cancer at the age of 79 in April.

Cllr Chadwick was first elected in 1991 and died shortly before his 80th birthday.

New voters have until midnight on Tuesday, June 14 to register for the by election.

The deadline for new postal vote applications is 5pm on Wednesday, June 15.

Nominations for a proxy to voter on an elector’s behalf are open until 5pm on Wednesday, June 22.

Emergency proxies can be put forward in the event of a medical emergency or if someone cannot vote in person for work reasons until 5pm on polling day.

The council’s current political makeup consists of 44 councillors in the ruling Conservative group, with 11 in the Liberal Democrat opposition.

The Liberal Democrats gained one member, Cllr Charlie Bayram, after he defected to the opposition from the Conservatives at the Council’s annual meeting last week.

The Yorkshire Party holds two seats on the council, both in Bridlington South, with two independent members and a seven-strong Independent group.

The next all-out local elections are due to be held in May 2023.
