Data Shows Increase in East Riding COVID Cases

Coronavirus cases in the East Riding are on the rise, with figures for the latter showing levels not seen since March.

Figures from the Covid Symptom Study, backed by Kings College London, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals and ZOE Global, show the estimated number of active coronavirus cases in the East Riding is 733, up by 290.

The East Riding’s total is the highest seen since late March when estimated active cases peaked at around 900 at the start of that month.

It comes as data from Public Health England (PHE) showed 88 new cases were recorded in the county in the week up to June 8th, up by 22 or 33.3 per cent, with a rolling rate of 25.8.

That recent increase in case numbers prompted East Riding Council’s public health director to call for the planned scrapping of remaining coronavirus restrictions to be pushed back.

Andy Kingdom said last week restrictions should remain in place for a few more weeks after their slated end on Monday, June 21 to “buy time” for the vaccine rollout.

Wellcome Sanger Institute figures showed the B.1.617.2 strain accounted for  60 per cent of the East Riding’s in the two weeks up to Saturday, June 5 up from 50 per cent in the two weeks up to Saturday, May 29.
