County Council Can't Support All Bus Services

Bus services in North Yorkshire can't be supported by public funds in the long term according to North Yorkshire's senior transport councillor.

North Yorkshire County Council's Executive Member for Transport, Councillor Keane Duncan, says falling passenger numbers have affected a number of key routes including the 840 from Whitby and 128 from Scarborough.

But he says public funds can't be the long term solution to keeping them running.

Concerns have been raised over the future of the 128 bus service between Scarborough and Helmsley.

A new lower frequency timetable was introduced after the operator said passenger numbers were significantly down.

County Councillor Joy Andrews says it's an essential service for many people, but adds more people do need to start using it.
