North Yorkshire Council says it is working to understand the best options for users of the Scarborough Sports Village 3G pitch as it confirms major repairs may cost £3m.
The council has also confirmed that the cost of the repairs to the playing surface could be in the region of £3m.
North Yorkshire Council revealed last Tuesday that a site survey carried out ahead of a planned resurfacing of the 3G pitch this summer had revealed "serious structural issues" with the pitch and the drainage system. the council say the issues mean the pitch wont pass an FA inspection and will need to be repaired before it can be used for competitive games next season.
In an update provided to This is the Coast, North Yorkshire Council’s assistant director for leisure, Jo Ireland, said:
“We understand how devastating this is for the club and the supporters. These serious and unexpected structural issues are complex, but we are working really hard with the club and other experts and agencies to understand the best options.
“We planned to resurface the pitch and undertake some remedial work which we expected would cost between £300,000 and £750,000. Ahead of that, we commissioned detailed surveys and discovered there were serious and significant structural issues that will take much longer to address and cost about £3 million.
“However, we have already had technical experts on site looking at solutions to deal with the issues the survey has uncovered, and we are actively discussing these with the contractors who were originally involved.
“While addressing this we need to keep in mind all legal advice linked to these quite shocking findings and also to understand exactly what costs might be involved in helping the club to relocate temporarily.
“The council and the club remain very much focussed on finding the best and most local short-term solution, and doing that as quickly as possible, while the longer-term issues are addressed.”
Corporate Director for Community Development at North Yorkshire Council, Nic Harne, spoke to Matthew Pells about the emerging situation and the work the council is doing to find a solution.
