The National Coastwatch Institute are hoping to get a mobile station up and running for the summer season.
Mike Johnson is from the NCI, he says they are inviting anyone interested in volunteering to join them at teh Evron Centre in teh town this afternoon.
Mike says they are lookign for a broad range of people.
Mike says:
"We are running an information / recruitment event at the Evron Centre, 1a John St, Filey, YO14 9DQ, on Thursday 17th March staring at 2.30pm.
We would like to invite people to come and see us for a couple of hours and bring a friend if they wish.
There is no need to book or stand on formalities. We will tell attendees everything they need to know about NCI and the new station with lots of time for questions. We’ll also provide tea and biscuits on arrival!"
Currently there are 57 Coast watch stations around the UK operated by over 2600 volunteers
They keep watch around the British Isles for maritime emergencies and provide reports to the coastguard.
Currently the northernmost station on the east coast is at Hornsea.
Pending planning agreement, the new mobile station is going to be located on the seafront at the south end of Filey beach. The NCI team say they need local support and volunteers to run it.
