Child MMR Vaccination Rates in East Riding Among Best in Country

Child Vaccination rates in the East Riding are among some of the best in the country.

East Yorkshire's director of Public Health - Andy Kingdom - says the county's low number of measles cases is directly related to the large number of children who have had the MMR jab.

Measles is a respiratory disease that is highly infectious and is most common in children.

It can cause a high fever, runny nose and rashes along with potentially serious complications, including death in the worst cases.

Measles, mumps and rubella together can result in meningitis, hearing loss and problems during pregnancy.

Having two measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine doses protects around 99 per cent of people from measles while there is no known cure for those who catch it.

94 percent of one year olds in the East riding have had the MMR vaccine, that's one of the highest vaccination rates in the UK.

Director of Public Health - Andy Kingdom - says the high rates of immunisation has been key in keeping the number of measles cases very low.
