Rail group says making Whitby rail journey's more reliable and increasing the number of trains is going to need more modern signalling.
Improving train journey times between Whitby and Middlesbrough will require improved signalling on the single track Esk valley line.
that's the view of the Esk Valley rail partnership who say the current signalling is antiquated and in need of updating.
Alan Williams from the partnership says adding a second track would be the ideal solution but is financially unviable.
The single track sections of the Esk Valley railway line are the key problem in improving the frequency and reliability of rail services in and out of Whitby.
Kerry Peers from Northern says the scheduling of services is key to make sure that trains running in opposite directions can pass each other smoothly without having to wait for the single track section to be free.
The Esk valley rail partnership are pressing for better signalling to help alleviate the problem.
Neil Buxton from the partnership says adding a second line would be ideal but is both financially and technically challenging.
Last week it was announced that plans to make all services from Whitby terminate at Middlesborough in an attempt to increase reliability on the line had been shelved after a large amount of public feedback about the potential loss of direct services to places like Newcastle.
