The contest took time to spark into life, with a cautious opening half-hour yielding few clear-cut opportunities for either side as both midfield battlelines held firm.

It was Bridlington who carved out the first major opening in the 35th minute. A sharp throw-in from Joe Batty released Ahmed Salam, who deftly played the ball back into Batty’s path. The full-back drove down the flank and whipped in an inviting cross for Luca Bolino, but under heavy pressure from the visiting defence, Bolino could only turn his effort wide of the target.

Morpeth responded almost instantly at the opposite end. A sweeping cross from the left flank found a late runner arriving at the far post, whose diving header flashed agonisingly wide of Alex Baird’s left-hand post.

The deadlock was finally broken two minutes before the interval through a moment of individual brilliance from Destiny Nnenanya. Goalkeeper Baird launched a deep kick forward, which was flicked intelligently into space by Salam. Nnenanya reacted quickest, taking the ball neatly past his marker before rifling an unstoppable finish into the roof of the net to give the Seasiders the lead.

Bridlington’s joy was short-lived, however, as Morpeth drew level deep into first-half stoppage time. A dangerous corner caused chaos inside the home penalty area, and after the Seasiders failed to clear their lines, the visitors forced the ball over the line. Despite vocal protests from the Bridlington players for a foul on Baird, the referee blew his whistle to signal a goal, sending the teams into the break on equal terms.

Bridlington started the second half on the front foot. Just seconds after the restart, Salam cut inside from the right and unleashed a low drive from the edge of the box, forcing the Morpeth keeper into a fine diving save to his left.

The match turned significantly in the 54th minute. With Morpeth threatening to break forward on a swift counter-attack, captain Tom Allan executed a full-blooded well timed challenge to halt the Morpeth attacker. Much to the disbelief of the Seasiders the referee deemed the tackle worthy of a straight red card, leaving Bridlington to navigate the final 36 minutes a man down.

Rather than sitting back, the hosts continued to offer a threat on the break. Nnenanya turned skillfully away from his defender before feeding Bolino, who drove deep into the penalty area and sent a dangerous low ball across the face of goal, only for Morpeth to scramble it clear.

Morpeth pressed for a winner as time wore on. In the 67th minute, Liam Tibbett was dispossessed after going down under pressure, allowing the visitors to break forward into the box, though the final effort drifted harmlessly wide of the far post.

Bridlington introduced fresh legs off the bench, bringing on Charlie Birdsall and Eddie Kettlewell, and Birdsall almost snatched all three points in the 75th minute. Sent clean through one-on-one with the Morpeth stopper, the substitute reacted quickly to get his shot away, but the keeper spread himself brilliantly to deny him.

Morpeth pushed hard in the closing stages, striking the side netting from a 20-yard free-kick before a booming volley clipped the support frame behind the goal in the 90th minute.

However, Bridlington's rearguard stood resolute through five minutes of added time to ensure a share of the spoils after a thoroughly entertaining performance.
