East Riding Councillors have elected independent councillor Liam Dealtry to act as the council’s Chairman for the 2025/26 year.
Cllr Dealtry, who represents the Bridlington Central and Old Town ward, was unanimously elected as the Chairman following his stint as vice chairman in the 2024/25 year.
The leader of East Riding Council, Cllr Anne Handley spoke very highly of Cllr Dealtry, she said:
“In my opinion, Cllr Dealtry will be an assets as the Chairman to this council.”
Cllr Dealtry gladly expressed his delight at becoming Chairman of the council. He said:
“I endeavour to be the best I can be and promote not just this council but the whole of this great county of ours.”
Looking ahead to his year in office, Councillor Dealtry said:
"Becoming chairman of my home county is a dream come true. This feeling can’t be beaten.
"While I've been serving as the vice chairman, I've had the opportunity to visit many events and everyone I met has been so friendly and welcoming, so I'm looking forward to the next year.
"I want to be a great ambassador for the East Riding and its people."
His consort will be his wife, Michelle Dealtry.
Councillor Dealtry added:
“As ex-British Army, the charities I have chosen to support were an automatic pick.”
He has chosen to support two local charities: SSAFA East Yorkshire (Soldiers’, Sailors’ and Airmen’s Families Association) and M.A.S.H. (Military Assistance Social Hub) during his year as chairman.
Cllr Dealtry has taken over from Conservative councillor Linda Bayram of the Howdenshire ward. Cllr Dealtry paid homage to Cllr Bayram who he had served as vice Chairman under for the last year. He said:
“It’s been an honour to serve at your right hand and to act as your vice Chairman. I’ve learnt a lot of valuable lessons from you over this year which I have taken on board.”
After receiving a series of kind words from a number of councillors, the outgoing chair, Cllr Bayram joked:
“I can’t believe you’re talking about me. I think I’ve been fairly rude at times and rambunctious even and I apologise to anybody I’ve upset on the way.”
Cllr Bayram also said:
“When I’m out and about, my God it’s been wonderful. What people you meet! Really kind, nice people and that makes this job all worthwhile.”
Councillors also elected Cllr Linda Johnson, a Liberal Democrat who serves the St Mary’s ward, as the new vice Chairman of the council. She said:
"I’m humbled that you’ve place your trust in me and I’m honoured that you’ve given me the opportunity to serve this council and our East Riding community in this way.”
